Last Thursday, the mesh Wi-Fi system on the Polygon server experienced a flaky link between two nodes. The problem started around 18:30 and lasted for about two hours before resolving itself. The issue was characterized by intermittent connectivity, where devices would lose and regain connection frequently.
Upon investigation, the root cause appeared to be a temporary bandwidth surge from heavy device usage during the evening. This surge overwhelmed the bandwidth available on the primary node's uplink, leading to packet loss and, consequently, the flaky connection. The primary node’s settings were adjusted to prioritize and buffer traffic, which helped in stabilizing the connection.
To prevent similar issues in the future, the server management team has decided to implement a bandwidth scheduler that limits the total amount of traffic during off-peak hours. This will ensure that the system can handle peak usage times without degrading the quality of the mesh network. Additionally, the team will monitor network performance more closely during high-traffic periods to catch any potential issues early.
