Nightly Restic Backups and Restore Drills

/docs-archive/old/forms/reports/2018/ · last edited 09 Nov 2022 · Support

We discussed the current state of our nightly restic backups and the need for regular restore drills to ensure the process is reliable and everyone knows how to recover data if needed. The current setup has been working well, but we identified a few areas for improvement. Specifically, the restore process needs to be more intuitive for non-technical users in our family and friends group.

Decisions made include assigning specific family members to be responsible for initiating the backup process, which they will verify and confirm by the end of the day. We also decided to document the restore process more comprehensively, including step-by-step instructions and potential pitfalls. An open question is whether to schedule a full restore drill monthly or quarterly to test the backup process without needing actual data recovery. The goal is to balance thoroughness with the practicality of regularly interrupting daily activities.
