Disk Space Incident Review

/docs-archive/backups/licences/ · last edited 29 Jan 2018 · Engineering

On the 15th of October, our Polygon home server experienced a significant disk space issue that impacted multiple users. The root cause was the accumulation of unnecessary files in user directories, particularly old backup snapshots. These snapshots, while initially intended to provide a safety net, had been left unattended for far too long. The system did not have a regular clean-up process, which allowed the storage to deplete over time.

To address this, we have implemented a new policy and automated script that runs weekly to purge old snapshots. This script identifies snapshots older than 6 months and deletes them, freeing up space while maintaining a recent backup. Additionally, we will educate users on the importance of manually managing their backups, emphasizing that automatic cleanup is only a supplement. This change not only ensures the system's stability but also improves the overall user experience by preventing such issues in the future.
